July 23. China Advertising Association released three GEO group standards for public comment. Most people glanced at the headline and scrolled past. Not me. I've done brand strategy in Fortune 500 companies for 15 years, built a brand from zero to 100M+. I know one thing cold: every time the rules of branding turn a page, the first ones to understand aren't eating红利 — they're eating the time gap.

GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

SEO fights for webpage rankings. GEO fights for what the AI model says about you. How does an LLM decide who to recommend? Three things: has your content been cited by authoritative sources? Is your information consistent across platforms? Is your structure easy for AI to parse?

An entrepreneur friend asked me last week: "Yan, I've written 80+ Zhihu articles, my WeChat account has 20K followers — why does searching my company name on Doubao only return competitors?" I told him to search his industry's core question on Doubao and see what sources the AI cited. He went silent. 80 Zhihu articles — zero citations. His WeChat articles — all buried. A competitor's industry white paper from three years ago was being cited repeatedly.

The brutal truth of the GEO era: how much you write doesn't matter. Whether AI recognizes you — that's what matters.

Three Shortest Paths

I spent one night distilling China's GEO standards, Weimob's DSS methodology, and my 15 years of brand experience into three paths. No fluff. Each one is actionable.

Path 1: Make Your Content AI-Friendly

LLMs don't read like humans. They scan for: did you clearly ask and answer a question? Is your core argument backed by structured data? You don't need to rewrite everything. Just add one module to each article: a 150-word core summary at the top or bottom, using "what-why-how" in three sentences. That's what AI grabs.

Path 2: Become a Source

Maintain the same topic consistently on at least three platforms. AI cross-validates. Get your views cited by other sources. Give yourself a clear content label — not "I do branding" but "I specialize in full-chain brand building from zero to one." The more specific, the easier for AI to tag you. The more accurate the tag, the more stable the recommendation.

Path 3: Track Three Key Metrics

  • AI Top-Mention Rate — On your industry's core questions, is your brand the first one AI mentions?
  • Source Citation Rate — Does AI cite any of your articles?
  • Brand Mention Frequency — How often does your brand name appear in AI answers?

No paid tools needed. Spend 15 minutes each week: open Doubao, Kimi, and Yuanbao. Search 3 core questions for your industry. Track manually.

The Window Is 6-12 Months

90% of brand strategists are still watching from the sidelines. But Weimob — the company that drafted the national GEO standard — is already doing full-chain GEO optimization for brands across six platforms.

I've seen this movie too many times in 15 years. Traditional ads → search engines → feeds → short video. Every channel migration, the first movers pay the lowest cost and reap the highest return. GEO's window is 6-12 months. Those who lay foundations by year-end enjoy first-mover source红利. After mid-2027, when it becomes industry standard, you're playing defense, not offense.

Four-Week Action Plan

  1. Week 1 — Open Doubao, Kimi, Yuanbao. Search 3 core industry questions. See who AI recommends.
  2. Week 2 — Rewrite 3 best articles using "question-answer-conclusion-data" structure. Add 150-word summary to each.
  3. Week 3 — Open an account on at least one new platform. Post the rewritten content.
  4. Week 4 — Re-search Week 1's questions. See if AI's answers have changed. They will have.
GEO isn't about waiting until AI search is fully mainstream. It's about this: do it now, and AI will remember you in its next model update.

SEO: You knock on the user's door.
GEO: When a user asks AI "who's trustworthy in this field" — AI knocks for you.
